Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd (WASSB) is an industry leader in offshore helicopter transportation services and rotary wing aviation services sectors. WASSB has been catering to the oil and gas industry in Malaysia since 2008 with a 5-year offshore helicopter transportation services contract with Carigali Hess.

In 2013, WASSB became the largest offshore helicopter transportation services provider in South East Asia operating in five countries namely Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Morocco and Mauritania.

Following this, a few other major oil and gas contracts were awarded, therefore significantly growing WASSB’s list of oil and gas clients which includes CPOC, TOTAL, KPOC, Lundin, WesternGeco, Hess, Shell, Tullow Oil, Mubadala Petroleum, CGG Veritas, ConocoPhillips, INPEX Offshore, PTTEP, Galp Energia Tarfayabb, PC Mauritania and Kosmos Energy.

2008 – Venturing Into the Oil & Gas Industry

The oil & gas industry is one of the biggest and most important income generator for the Malaysian economy and a large number of oil & gas operations are based along the East Coast of Malaysia.

With so much oil and gas activity, the need for a reliable aviation services provider was evident. In 2008, backed by their impeccable track record, WASSB established their initial presence in the oil and gas industry.

WASSB’s ventured into oil and gas operations when it secured a 5-year contract to provide offshore transport services for Carigali HESS. The contract provided for transport of personnel and goods to offshore locations from a dedicated base in Kota Bharu using two Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopters.

A reliable helicopter with an immaculate track record, the Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopters are proven for performance, comfort and safety, with spacious cabin interiors, enhanced safety and dispatch reliability. They also require relatively low operating costs and boast superior mission versatility.

An Oil And Gas Base in Kota Bharu

To service the Petronas Carigali Hess contract, WASSB built a brand new base in Kota Bharu. The base facilities include an engineering control room, radio room, flight planning room, maintenance workshop, passenger lounge and hangar.

A Landmark Oil & Gas Aviation Deal

In early 2011, WASSB signed a landmark contract to provide oil and gas rotary wing services to five international oil and gas companies. The multibillion dollar contract, which spans ten years, was the single largest contract ever awarded in Malaysian helicopter oil and gas support.

Having started AW139 operations on 1st April 2011, WASSB’s fleet has now flown more than 80,000 hours in support of international oil and gas companies such as Petronas Carigali, ExxonMobil, Carigali Hess, CPOC, Talisman, Petrofac, SapuraKencana Energy, TOTAL, KPOC, Lundin, WesternGeco, Hess, Shell, Tullow Oil, Mubadala Petroleum, CGG Veritas, ConocoPhillips, PTTEP, INPEX Offshore, Galp Energia Tarfayabb, PC Mauritania and Kosmos Energy. WASSB operates oil and gas mission from its bases in Kota Bharu, Kerteh, Kuala Terengganu, Miri and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. WASSB have also expanded internationally and now operate from its base in Songkhla, Thailand, Jakarta and Balikpapan Indonesia.

WASSB Oil and Gas division expansion will bring its fleet to a total of 40 helicopters – 35 AW139, four AW189, and one Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopters for oil and gas transportation. One of the 34 AW139 helicopters is VIP configured and is specially utilised for VIP transportation.

Shaping the Cutting Edge Oil and Gas Helicopter Fleet

To service the largest contract in the industry requires top quality rotary wing aircraft and WASSB expanded their fleet with the purchase of the AgustaWestland AW139, and AW189 family of new generation helicopters.

With a fleet of AgustaWestland helicopters, WASSB leapfrogged to the forefront of regional oil and gas aviation, becoming the largest oil and gas helicopter support provider in the South East Asian region. WASSB has also become the fourth largest operator of the AW139 in the world, making a huge achievement for a young company.

Features of the AgustaWestland AW139

The AW139 helicopters are the latest generation of helicopters from the renowned aircraft manufacturers, delivering the best performance in its class. The AW139’s exceptional One Engine Inoperative (OEI) with its power reserve assures Category “A” (Class 1) operations from a helipad (elevated or ground level) even at maximum take-off weight.

Excellent performance is guaranteed for operations worldwide, even in extremely hot and high environments or harsh conditions, making the AW139 one of the few helicopters that is certified to the highest safety specifications for oil and gas support.

  • Seats up to 15 passengers with 2 pilots
  • 2 x Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6C-67C engines producing 1,252 kW each
  • Cruise speed of 145 knots and maximum ceiling of 20,000 ft
  • Range of 675 nautical miles
  • Maximum take-off weight of 6,800 kg

Safety Features

TCAS (Traffic and Collision Avoidance System), HUMS (Health & Usage Monitoring Systems), HFDM (Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring), EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System), Emergency Floats, Life Rafts, HEELS (Helicopter Emergency Exit Light System), ADELT (Automatic Deployable ELT with Navigation interface and GPS), VHF/FM Tactical radio, and an Auxiliary Fuel Tank.

New State-of-the-Art Bases

With no expense spared, WASSB operates from nine state-of-the-art facilities. WASSB’s domestic oil and gas operations are located in Kota Bharu, Kerteh, Kuala Terengganu, and Kota Kinabalu. Meanwhile, WASSB’s overseas operations span across Songkhla (Thailand), Balikpapan (Indonesia) and Jakarta (Indonesia). Constructed specifically to cater to the provision of offshore aviation services, all these bases meet and surpass all various industry specific requirements and safety regulations.

A Distinguished Mark of Quality

Weststar Aviation Services aircraft are easily distinguished by their distinctly elegant deep blue exterior and stylish metallic grey stripes running lengthwise along the tail boom of its helicopters or on the fuselage of its business jets. The Weststar insignia is prominently displayed on its tail.

Taking Over the Region by Storm

Having been propelled to the forefront of South East Asian offshore aviation, boasting the largest fleet in the region, WASSB is further set to become the first Asian offshore aviation service provider to expand their operations overseas. WASSB will soon expand operations to other regional hubs in response to growing interest in oil & gas exploration.

Venturing Into Oil & Gas Exploration

After successfully penetrating the offshore aviation industry through the provision of helicopter transport services, WASSB is set to further expand its presence in the global oil & gas industry by extending its services into marginal fields exploration.

With heightened oil & gas interest in developing Asian countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, WASSB’s spotless track record and extensive capabilities has opened up various opportunities within the region.

Further Fleet Expansion

Possessing a total fleet of 40 aircraft, WASSB is already the largest offshore aviation services provider in the region, with plans to further increase its fleet in the coming years.
